The poultry industry has become one of the most important suppliers of affordable animal protein, feeding billions of people worldwide. However, rapid growth in production has raised concerns about environmental impact, animal welfare, and resource efficiency. For this reason, the concept of sustainable poultry production has become a central focus for professionals, researchers, and policymakers. Sustainability in poultry production refers to achieving a balance between economic efficiency, environmental responsibility, and social acceptability. On the economic side, producers must remain profitable while ensuring stable food supplies. Environmentally, farms are encouraged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and adopt better waste management practices, such as converting poultry litter into biofertilizer or renewable energy. Socially, animal welfare, worker safety, and consumer trust are gaining increasing importance. Key strategies for achieving sustainability include precision feeding, which ensures that birds receive the exact nutrients they need, minimizing waste and improving feed conversion. The use of alternative ingredients, such as insect protein or by-products from other industries, also reduces pressure on conventional feed resources like corn and soybean (which in turn declines currency withdrawal from the country). In addition, improved housing and ventilation systems not only enhance bird welfare but also reduce mortality and environmental stress. Technology is playing a vital role as well. Sensors, automation, and data-driven decision-making allow farmers to optimize feed, water, and energy use, resulting in more efficient and environmentally friendly operations. Similarly, genetic progress has produced broilers that grow faster with better feed efficiency, further reducing the environmental footprint per kilogram of meat. Ultimately, sustainable poultry production is not just about reducing costs or increasing efficiency—it is about securing the future of food. By adopting environmentally sound practices and prioritizing animal welfare and food safety, the poultry industry can meet the rising demand for protein while maintaining consumer confidence and protecting natural resources. The road to sustainability is challenging, but it offers poultry producers an opportunity to lead in building a more resilient and responsible food system for future generations.
